DAY BY DAY

  • Day 01: After arriving at the airport of Madrid, we travel to the centre of the city and stay at a hotel in the centre. We will begin this holiday with a walk before dinner, which we will enjoy it at a lively place that offers the traditional flavour that characterises Madrid.

  • Day 02: We will dedicate the first few hours of the day to visiting one of the best museums in the world: the Prado Museum. We will visit other places in the city, such as the emblematic Fountains of Neptuno and Cibeles, the Royal Palace and the bustling Gran Vía. You will have free time to go shopping or visit some of the city’s many museums and monuments

  • Day 03: We leave the capital of Spain for a day to visit one of the most historical cities on the Peninsula: Toledo. Here, we can see the country’s Catholic, Jewish and Moslem heritage. We will visit the alcazar, a synagogue and the house of El Greco. We return to Madrid through Alcalá de Henares, a beautiful town which, like Toledo, has been designated a World Heritage Site. We will visit the university and learn about the famous writer, Cervantes, before returning to Madrid.

  • Day 04: We now travel to the north of Madrid and have free time in the city for last-minute shopping. We leave the urban area and come to the immense plains of Castile. First of all, we arrive at Ávila, a walled town with a beautiful cathedral and many other monuments. Walking around Ávila and climbing up on to the walls are two activities not to be missed in this town, which is closely linked to the life of St Teresa of Jesus.

  • Day 05: Not very far away is the town of Segovia, dominated by the grandeur of its Roman aqueduct. Like Ávila, Segovia maintains the flavour of provincial Spain, where tradition can be seen on every corner. We will visit the alcazar and enjoy the local gastronomy: the famous suckling pig. We then enter a countryside marked by wine and come to Peñafiel, where we will visit the castle and an underground winery that falls under the Ribera del Duero designation of origin.

  • Day 06: Today, we follow the tracks of El Cid and travel to Burgos. However, before we do, we stop off at the historical town of Lerma. Once in Burgos, a local guide will show us the impressive cathedral, which is a beautiful example of the Gothic style. We will walk through the Gate of Santa María and along Paseo del Espolón and we will visit the Monastery of Las Huelgas.

  • Day 07: We follow the Way of St James and come across towns and villages dedicated to pilgrim life. We will visit one of the most beautiful and interesting churches on the Way: the Romanesque San Martín in Frómista. We will feel like real pilgrims and walk along a section of the Way of St James. In Villalcázar de Sirga, we will get our strength back and enjoy a dish of roast lamb. We continue our journey to the city of León. We stay at a charming hotel near the cathedral./p>

  • Day 08: A local guide will show us the interior and exterior of the magnificent Gothic cathedral; then we will walk to the Basilica of San Isidoro, a wonderful example of the Romanesque style. We will also look at Gaudí’s work in the city (Palace of Los Botines) and the bustling narrow streets of the ‘Barrio Húmedo’. We now travel south along the Silver Way. The city of Zamora stands on the banks of the River Duero and offers visitors its Romanesque architecture. We carry on to the city of Salamanca, which is famous for its university.

  • Day 09: We spend the morning visiting the city of Salamanca and our walk will include the university buildings, the House of Las Conchas, the two cathedrals and Plaza Mayor, which is the centre of everyday life. We then travel to Ciudad Rodrigo, which offers visitors its walled enclosure, the cathedral of Santa María and civil and religious buildings of great interest. We return to Salamanca, where we end our holiday with a farewell dinner.
