The Tourism Tax, also known as Tourist Tax or City Tax, is a consolidated rate in major biggest European cities. For years, the most visited destinations charge this fee per person per night and even in some cities have increased this year the rate.

Tourism Tax is charged to visitors —per person and overnight stay— by the municipality in the biggest European cities. Prices vary between countries and cities and the rating of the accommodation.

In Europe there are around 150 cities and destinations of 21 countries where the City Tax is a commonplace. In the case of Spain two autonomous communities have implemented this fee: Catalonia and the Balearic Islands. The tax is not applicable anywhere else in Spain. In Portugal the fee is charged in Lisbon, Porto and Algarve.

    Barcelona

In Barcelona, one of the biggest cities of Catalonia, rates vary according to the type of accommodation, its category and whether it is in the city of Barcelona or elsewhere in Catalonia.

Like most of European destinations, it is paid per person and unit of stay (day or part thereof), with or without overnight stay, with a maximum seven-night stay per person in the same accommodation over a continuous period. General rate in 5-star hotels is 2,25€, 1.10 € in 4, 3 and 2-star hotels.  For tourist apartments there is established only one rate: 2,25€ per person and night.

  • Catalonia

For the rest of Catalonia, the tax is up to 2,25€ in 5-star hotels, 1€ in 4-star hotels and 0,50€ in 2 or 3-star hotels.

  • Balearic Islands

Respect to Balearics -Mallorca, Ibiza, Formentera and Menorca- tourism tax is up to 4€ per person and night in 5-star hotels, 3€ in 4-star hotels and 2€ in 2 and 3- star hotels. Accommodations such as hostels, apartments or rural houses are taxed at 2€. The cheapest are campsites and guesthouses: 1€ per person per night. Those under the age of 16 are exempt.

  • Lisbon, Porto and Algarve

Lisbon and Porto both applies 2€ to guest over the age of 13, per person and per overnight stay, up to a maximum of 7 nights per stay.

Algarve has been one of the last destinations to charge the Tourist Tax. The 1.50€ fee is implemented in all the accommodations of the region.
