Throughout this weekend wildfires have destroyed large hectares of the central region of Portugal, especially in the districts of Viseu, Castelo Branco and Santarém. The Portuguese country is still in alert but major wildfire is under control.

Since this weekend, fires have affected large hectares of forest in the district of Castelo Branco- a district 139 miles northeast of Lisbon -, Viseu and Santarém.

The fires started on Saturday afternoon and were fanned by strong winds. Villages were evacuated as a precaution, and several major roads were closed. The Government has extended until today, Tuesday, the maximum alert in the central and northern part of the country due to fire hazards.
