However,  you will also have the chance to sail the Camino at some points to enjoy the beauty of the estuaries and bahias os the Cantabrian Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Portuguese Coastal Way: Ferry Caminha – A Guarda

The Portuguese Coastal Way lets you enjoy the Atlantic coast along Portugal and then along Galicia. Once you reach Caminha in Portugal you can get a ferry to cross the natural border between Portugal and Spain: the Miño River.

  • From Tuesday to Sunday: every hour (depending on the water level)
  • The Ferry does not work on Mondays. If you want to cross the border by boat you can get in one the taxi boats like Taxi Mar which is 5€ /person.

Opening hours

  • Tuesday – Friday: 09:00 – 19:00 (Portuguese times- one hour less than in Spain)
  • Weekends: 10:00 – 19:00

Camino del Norte: Boat Laredo – Santoña

When walking the Camino del Norte from Bilbao in the Basque Land to Santander in Cantabria you will have the chance to take a boat in the stage from Liendo to Noja to cross the Santoña estuary. A 10 minutes trip in a small boat from the Salvé Beach in the Puntal area of Laredo will take you to the Pasaje Pier in the center of Santoña.

  • The small boat leaves as clients arrive and keeps and depends on the weather.

Opening hours

  • High season (normally July & August): Monday to Friday – 9:00 – 21:00
  • Low season (from 1st of March): 9:00 – 14:00
  • Weekends:  9:00 – 18:00
  • Does not operate from October to March

Camino del Norte: Boat Somo – Santander

A second boat trip on your way through the Northern Way will let you enjoy the Cantabrian Sea. It is in the stage between Noja and Santander where you will take a small boat (known as “pedreñeras”) to cross the Miera Estuary and the Santander Bay from Somo to Santander.  A 20 min sail trip that will take you from the pier Somo to the pier in Santander.

Rota Vicentina: small traditional fishing boat

The Rota Vicentina is a unique experience along the Atlantic coast of Portugal. Walking through beaches, visiting small fishing villages, enjoying the beauty of Atlantic Ocean.

It is in one of the stages between Vila Nova de Milfontes and Almograve where you can get a small traditional fishing boat to cross the River Mira instead of walking around to cross the river through the bridge which was built in the 70’s.

Maria da Conceição also known as “São” kept the family business of transferring people from Vila Nova de Milfontes, from the Barbacã Stairs (near de ‘Castle’)  to the other shore – Praia das Furnas after the bridge was built.)

Times

  • The traditional fishing boat leaves when the clients arrive and it is highly recommender to call her before hand to ensure the trip. Normally every 30 minutes.

  • Low season 09h00 – 16h00
  • High season (15th of June to the 15th of September) 09h00 – 19h00
  • Lunch break 13h00 – 14h00
  • Does not operate: December and January
